Guarapari's Historic Center: Heritage Near Perocão
A 16th-century church, ruins listed as heritage, and a 1950s landmark hotel — 15 minutes from the Argos cabins.
7/14/2026

Guarapari is not just beaches. Eight kilometers from Perocão, the city's Historic Center holds a church built in the 16th century, ruins listed as heritage since 1989, and a hotel that was a symbol of elegance in the 1950s — all walkable, free to visit.
Where the city began
The Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built in 1585 atop a hill, marking the start of Guarapari's settlement — work linked to Father José de Anchieta, a central figure in the Jesuit colonization of Espírito Santo. The church holds a sacred collection with 18th-century pieces and remains active today. A few meters below, the ruins of the old mother church — built in 1677 and deactivated in 1878 due to deterioration — were listed as cultural heritage by the State Culture Council in 1989. No roof, no doors: just stone walls that survived nearly 350 years of sea air, open to the public all day. From the hilltop, the view stretches over the waterfront and the canal — the same high ground that led the first settlers to pick this spot.
The 1677 ruins have been heritage-listed since 1989 — open-air heritage, free to visit, in the middle of the city.
Radium Hotel and Areia Preta Beach
On Areia Preta Beach, the Radium Hotel was an icon of tourism in Espírito Santo in the 1950s — the place to be when Guarapari became a health destination thanks to its local monazitic sand. Deactivated for years and currently under conservation work, the building remains heritage-listed and is the most recognizable landmark in the city center. Right next to it runs the most traditional craft fair in Espírito Santo, active since 1978: outside high season, vendors are guaranteed on Saturdays and Sundays from 4pm. The construction fence around the facade is part of the building's own story — heritage-listed sites stay protected even while out of operation, and the route simply passes by, with no loss for visitors.
Jesuit Well and Sant'Ana Grotto
The self-guided route adds two more stops, both with explanatory signage on site. The Jesuit Well, on Atalaia Hill, was built around 1587 to supply the Jesuit missions — built from stone, shell, and whale oil, and still standing today. Sant'Ana Grotto, reopened in 1991 after restoration, became a place of faith and reflection, tied to the city's oldest religious memory. None of the five landmarks charge admission or require booking — the route can be done in any order, on foot, following the signage. All five stops sit a short walk from each other, inside the Historic Center itself — no car needed between one stop and the next.
Fitting the route in from Perocão

- Average time: 2-3 hours to cover all five stops at an easy pace, including a coffee stop on the waterfront.
- Best window: Saturday or Sunday late afternoon, to connect with the craft fair next to the Radium Hotel.
Argos and the Historic Center
The Argos cabins Cavalo Marinho and Ouriço do Mar sit in Perocão, northern Guarapari, on ES-060 between Santa Mônica and Jabaraí — 8 km from the Historic Center, about 10 to 15 minutes by car without central beachfront traffic. For guests already in town for the Guarapari Winter Festival, running July 17-26, the historic route works well as a half-day outing: leave after breakfast, be back for lunch at the cabin's leisure area before the evening show. Both cabins keep a sea view and a private leisure area with a soaking tub and open-fire grill — a quiet base for pairing a morning of local history with an afternoon back at the beach.
Guarapari beyond the beach
Two sea-view cabins in Perocão, 10-15 minutes from the Historic Center. Self check-in until 10pm and human support in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
