The Argos Esmeralda and Argos Safira studios sit on Rua Barata Ribeiro, one of the busiest streets in Copacabana — a few meters from the constant flow of buses, retail and nightlife that defines the neighborhood. Before any decorating choice, the renovation of both units solved a more basic problem: how to keep the bedroom quiet in a neighborhood that never stops. The answer sat in the window frame — a noise-sealed window, installed as a factory standard, not an optional upgrade.

Copacabana is one of Rio's loudest neighborhoods

Urban noise in Copacabana has been the subject of academic research. An acoustic mapping of the neighborhood, carried out by researchers linked to UFRJ, cross-referenced street classification — expressway, arterial, collector and local — with sound pressure levels measured in the field, and found that traffic volume and the density of residents and tourists make noise a relevant urban-planning problem in the area. This isn't an opinion about the neighborhood; it's a technical reading of how it runs 24 hours a day.

Barata Ribeiro concentrates bus lines, pharmacies, markets and a constant flow of pedestrians — one of the most commercial streets in the neighborhood, which makes life easy for anyone staying there, but also makes it one of the loudest from early morning on. Without acoustic treatment in the window frame, street sound goes straight into the room, including at night, when traffic drops but nightlife picks up.

Choosing the window frame during the renovation

When planning the renovation of both studios in the Armoleu Building, Argos chose a window with double glazing and rubber sealing on all four sides of the frame — not for looks, for acoustic performance. A single 4mm pane lets through nearly the entire frequency range of street traffic; the combination of an air gap between two glass panels, paired with proper sealing on the frame, can cut sound transmission by up to 50 decibels, according to technical specifications from the glass industry. In practice, the noise of a bus stopped at the light outside disappears once the window is closed.

The decision was part of a larger renovation package, which also replaced flooring, wiring and plumbing in both apartments — but the window frame was treated as a technical priority, not a cosmetic one. Swapping single glass for double glazing with proper sealing costs more on the job than painting a wall or buying new furniture, and it never shows up in a listing photo. It's the kind of investment that only registers if you live there — or, for a guest staying a few days, if you sleep there.

The window frame isn't a decorating choice — it's the piece that decides whether a guest sleeps with the street noise or without it.

What the sealing solves — and what backs it up

A sealed window on its own doesn't complete the comfort package. In both studios, it works together with split air conditioning in the living room and bedroom and blackout curtains, forming what Argos itself describes, in the units' presentation, as a quiet, cool environment — closed off, climate-controlled and isolated from street activity, regardless of time of day or season.
