MAM and Chácara do Céu: Rio's Art Scene Near Copacabana
Two free museums, less than half an hour apart, starting from the Argos studios on Barata Ribeiro.
7/12/2026

Two museums, decades apart in design, one answer for guests staying in Copacabana who want to leave the beach circuit without losing the whole day to it: MAM, on Guanabara Bay, and Chácara do Céu, up in Santa Teresa. Both have free admission, sit less than half an hour apart by car, and fit into a morning starting from the Argos studios on Barata Ribeiro.
MAM: modernism on the edge of the bay
The Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro sits at Av. Infante Dom Henrique, 85, inside Flamengo Park. The building is a design by Affonso Eduardo Reidy, its exposed-concrete structure carried on V-shaped pillars that became a reference point for Brazilian modernist architecture — the surrounding gardens are by Roberto Burle Marx, and building and landscaping form a single piece; it's worth setting aside time to walk the grounds, not just the galleries. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm; on Sundays, 10am to 11am is reserved for visitors with specific accessibility needs. Admission is free, with a voluntary contribution suggested at the ticket desk or when buying online in advance. The MAM Cinemateca, showing repertory films, runs Tuesday to Sunday on a separate schedule from the exhibitions. The permanent collection of Brazilian and Latin American modern art is the throughline, but the temporary exhibition schedule changes throughout the year — worth checking the current calendar before planning the visit.
Chácara do Céu: the Castro Maya collection in Santa Teresa
About 20 minutes by car from MAM, at Rua Murtinho Nobre, 93, in Santa Teresa, the Museu Chácara do Céu occupies the former residence of collector Raymundo Ottoni de Castro Maya. It's part of the Museus Castro Maya, alongside Museu do Açude in Tijuca Forest. The collection includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Portinari and Di Cavalcanti, plus period furniture and objects — and a terrace with one of the most-cited views of the historic Centro and Guanabara Bay, reason enough not to rush the visit. Open every day except Tuesday, 10am to 5pm, last entry 4:45pm; the outdoor area closes a bit later, at 5pm, last entry 4:30pm. Free admission every open day.
Reidy designed MAM to converse with the bay; Castro Maya built Chácara do Céu to converse with the historic Centro — two ways of looking at the same city, 20 minutes apart.
How to fit both into the same visit
- MAM in the morning (opens 10am) — set aside 1h30 for the collection and Burle Marx gardens.
- Lunch around Flamengo or Glória before moving on.
- Head up to Santa Teresa by car or app (20-25 min), or the tram from Estação Carioca, downtown — R$20 round trip, running daily 8am to 6pm.
- At least 1h at Chácara do Céu — the terrace asks for unhurried time.
- Back to Copacabana: 25-35 min by car, depending on late-afternoon traffic.
Starting from Copacabana
Both museums sit outside the most obvious Zona Sul axis, but neither demands complicated logistics. From the Edifício Armoleu, on Rua Barata Ribeiro — home to the Argos Esmeralda and Safira studios, 3 blocks from the beach and 2 from the metro — the drive or app ride to MAM runs about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic along Aterro do Flamengo. To add Santa Teresa, tack on another 20 to 25 minutes, or the option of getting off downtown and continuing by tram. It's not a full-day trip away from the shore: you can leave after breakfast and be back in time for late afternoon at the beach.
A base minutes from the museums of Zona Sul and downtown
The Argos Esmeralda and Safira studios sit at Edifício Armoleu, on Barata Ribeiro — close enough to the beach for daily life, and a short drive from the museum circuit through Flamengo and Santa Teresa.
Check availabilityFrequently asked questions
Are MAM and Chácara do Céu free?
Yes, both have free admission. MAM suggests a voluntary contribution at the ticket desk or when booking online in advance; Chácara do Céu doesn't charge on any day of the week.
Do both museums close on the same day?
No. MAM is open Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday); Chácara do Céu closes only on Tuesdays. So on Tuesday neither is open; on Monday, only Chácara do Céu operates.
Can you visit both museums the same day starting from Copacabana?
Yes, with room to spare. Counting travel time, about 1h30 at each museum, and normal traffic, the full route fits into a morning and early afternoon starting from the studios on Barata Ribeiro.
How do you get to Santa Teresa without a car?
The tram leaves from Estação Carioca, downtown (exit B of the Carioca metro station), with a R$20 fare that covers a same-day round trip. The Paula Mattos branch runs daily from 8am to 6pm.
Do you need to book a time slot to visit?
No, admission is free at both museums with no time-slot booking — just confirm the day they're open before heading out, since special exhibitions occasionally change the routine.
