Copacabana Lookouts: the Fort, Arpoador, and the walk there
From Rua Barata Ribeiro to Pedra do Arpoador along the waterfront, with two stops and a wide-open sea view — no car, no ride-hailing app.

From Rua Barata Ribeiro to Pedra do Arpoador, the waterfront walk in Copacabana passes two spots worth stopping for: the Forte de Copacabana complex, at the beach’s southern tip, and the lookout that separates Copacabana from Ipanema. It’s a shoes-on route — no car, no ride-hailing app — with the sea in sight the whole way.
The waterfront as the spine of the stroll
Copacabana’s mosaic sidewalk runs pretty much straight from Posto 1 to Posto 6, with the beach on the right for anyone walking toward Arpoador. It’s the simplest South Zone route if you’re staying between Posto 2 and Posto 3 — like Argos’ studios on Rua Barata Ribeiro, three blocks from the sea. No sketchy crossings, and a kiosk every few meters for whoever feels like pausing mid-way.
First stop: Forte de Copacabana
About a 35-minute walk from Posto 2 — 2.5 kilometers along the waterfront — Forte de Copacabana is open Tuesday through Sunday and on holidays, from 10am to 7pm (closed Mondays). Tickets are R$ 10 full price and R$ 5 half price, paid in cash or Pix at the ticket booth; on Tuesdays entry is free, which also brings in a bigger crowd. From inside the complex, the lookout facing the open sea lays out the full curve of the beach — with Confeitaria Colombo running on the terrace for anyone who wants to stretch the stop a little longer.
The prettiest stretch of the walk is the one that shows up least in photos: the gap between the end of Copacabana and the start of Arpoador, where the sand narrows and the Atlantic hits the rocks harder.
Second stop: Pedra do Arpoador
Ten more minutes on foot after the Fort and you’re at Pedra do Arpoador — a free lookout with no set hours, open any time of day. It’s one of Rio’s most disputed spots to watch the sun drop behind Dois Irmãos and Pedra da Gávea, with Ipanema and Leblon wide open to the left as you arrive. There’s no ticket booth and no paywall structure — just rock, people sitting, and applause when the sun disappears into the horizon, especially common in summer. If you’d rather head back by метро, General Osório station is a 15-minute walk from the lookout.
The route in three steps
- Posto 2 to Forte de Copacabana — 35 minutes, about 2.5 km along the waterfront, no uphill.
- Forte de Copacabana to Pedra do Arpoador — another 10 minutes, at the far end of Copacabana.
- Return — the same waterfront walk back, or General Osório metro, 15 minutes from the lookout.
Leaving from Argos
Argos Esmeralda and Argos Safira studios are in Edifício Armoleu, on Rua Barata Ribeiro — three blocks from the beach and two blocks from Cardeal Arcoverde station, a straight shot starting point for either route. A 24-hour doorman for anyone who heads out early or comes back late from sunset, and sound-sealed windows so you can sleep without the street noise after the walk.
