Running the shoreline in winter: 15 km between Leme and Ipanema

Winter in Rio takes away a runner’s biggest obstacle the rest of the year: the afternoon heat. Between June and August, the temperature along the shoreline rarely climbs past 26°C, the wind blows cooler, and the strip of sand loses some of the bustle it shares with beachgoers in summer. It’s the right window for a real long run — and the stretch of shoreline between Leme and Ipanema lays out a natural 15 km route, without ever leaving the sea’s edge.

Why Rio winter is the right season to log miles on the shoreline

Copacabana’s promenade runs for a continuous 4 km, from Leme to Arpoador, with the bike lane marked every 100 meters — distance you can trust without a GPS report. In summer, that same stretch fills up with beachgoers and street vendors, and the heat pushes any long run to before 7 a.m. In winter, the pedestrian lane opens up and the route turns into a training track that’s practically clear for much of the day.

The route: 15 km between Leme and Ipanema

The natural start is the northern tip of the promenade, at Praia do Leme, about 1.5 km from the studios. From there, the route runs the length of Copacabana (4 km), goes past Arpoador, and enters Ipanema up to around Posto 9 — the continuous shoreline between Leme, Copacabana, and Ipanema adds up to about 7.5 km one way. Turn at Posto 9 and retrace the exact same path back to Leme, and you’ve got 15 km without ever leaving the running line.

Between Leme and Ipanema, the bike lane’s 100-meter markings replace any app — you always know exactly where you are.

Support stops along the way

  1. Kiosks all along Av. Atlântica — water, coconut water, and sports drinks every few blocks, from Leme to Arpoador.
  2. Numbered lifeguard stations 1 through 6 in Copacabana — an easy mileage reference, usually with a public restroom nearby.
  3. Beach showers scattered along the shoreline — a quick rinse before heading back to the studio.
  4. A dedicated 3.5 km bike lane on the Ipanema/Leblon stretch — separated from the pedestrian flow.

Timing: early or late afternoon

Even in winter, midday sun can get in the way on a long run. The two windows that work best are early morning, from 6 a.m. on, with light and the company of other runners, and late afternoon, from 4:30 p.m. on, before the low sun starts glaring across the horizon over the sea. Outside those hours, the promenade loses natural light, but the stretch between Leme and Ipanema still ranks among the city’s brightest and busiest — even at night.

Home base for training: Argos studios in Copacabana

Argos Esmeralda and Argos Safira studios are in Edifício Armoleu, on Rua Barata Ribeiro — three blocks from the beach and two blocks from Cardeal Arcoverde metro, an easy exit to the promenade in either direction of the route. The unit has a work setup ready for anyone balancing training with a remote routine, and the soundproofed window guarantees rest between sessions, even in a room facing the street.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the total distance of the route?

The 15 km come from running from Leme to around Posto 9 in Ipanema (about 7.5 km) and returning to Leme along the same route.

Can I shorten the route?

Yes. Copacabana’s promenade alone runs 4 km continuously between Leme and Arpoador — out and back makes 8 km without leaving the neighborhood.

Is there a bike lane separate from the pedestrian lane?

Yes. Copacabana has a bike lane marked every 100 meters along the promenade’s 4 km, and the Ipanema/Leblon stretch has its own dedicated 3.5 km bike lane.

What’s the best time in winter?

From 6 a.m. in the morning, or from 4:30 p.m. in the late afternoon — outside the strongest midday sun window, even with mild temperatures.

Is there anywhere to get water or shower along the way?

Yes. Kiosks along Av. Atlântica sell water and coconut water, and there are beach showers scattered along the shoreline for a quick rinse after the run.
